Atmospheric dispersion compensation for extremely large telescopes.
Achieving diffraction limited imaging with future ground-based optical telescopes will require adaptive optics for correction of atmospheric turbulence and also efficient techniques for atmospheric dispersion compensation. We study the benefit of using a linear atmospheric dispersion corrector (ADC) coupled with a deformable mirror on a 42-m Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) operating in the VIRJ...
متن کاملFabrication of large secondary mirrors for astronomical telescopes
A new class of telescope is being built with primary mirrors as large as 8.4 meters in diameter and as fast as f/i . Fabricating the secondary mirrors for these telescopes has presented tough challenges because of their large sizes, up to 1.7 meter diameter; their aspheric departure of more than 300 microns; the required figure accuracy of a few tens of nanometers; and the fact that they are ty...
متن کاملUnimorph piezoelectric deformable mirrors for space telescopes
We have developed, manufactured and tested a unimorph deformable mirror for space applications based on piezoelectric actuation. The mirror was designed for the correction of low-order Zernike modes with a stroke of several tens of micrometers over a clear aperture of 50 mm. It was successfully tested in thermal vacuum, underwent lifetime tests, and was exposed to random vibrations, sinusoidal ...
متن کاملAnalysis methods for Atmospheric Cerenkov Telescopes
Three different analysis techniques for Atmospheric Imaging System are presented. The classical Hillas parameters based technique is shown to be robust and efficient, but more elaborate techniques can improve the sensitivity of the analysis. A comparison of the different analysis techniques shows that they use different information for gamma-hadron separation, and that it is possible to combine...
متن کاملShaping Light: MOEMS Deformable Mirrors for Microscopes and Telescopes
Micromachined deformable mirrors (DMs) have enabled rapid advances in applications ranging from large telescope astronomy and free space laser communication to biological microscopy and retinal imaging over the past decade. In this talk I describe our efforts at Boston University and at Boston Micromachines Corporation to design, fabricate, and control MOEMS DMs for adaptive optics (AO) applica...
